How Weed Won The West

Filmmaker Kevin Booth (American Drug War) offers this documentary that chronicles the exploding popularity of medical marijuana dispensaries in California and the mixed response from law enforcement agencies. Focusing on the controversial story of Organica, a legal Los Angeles pot club that was raided in 2009, the film also includes insights from a range of medical marijuana advocates, including a former LAPD cop.

Plot: With California and the rest of the country going bankrupt, one business is booming. How Weed Won the West is the story of the growing Medical Marijuana industry, focusing on Los Angeles with over 1000 legal dispensaries doling out the buds. Following the story of Organica, a southland dispensary which was raided by state and federal agencies in August of 2009, the film shows that although much has changed with Obama in office, the drug war is nowhere near over. Kevin Booth, producer/director of American Drug War, picks up where the last film left off and continues his fight against the hypocrisy of the War on Drugs. Intended to inform and entertain, this fast paced and even sometimes funny film features Texas conspiracy guru Alex Jones, Ethan Nadelmann head of Drug Policy Alliance, and a host of amazing characters including a former LAPD narcotics officer who now thinks all drugs should be legal.

HYS – Remakes and adaptations

It’s been a while since the ESPV team has offered a HaveYourSay post for yall to mill over.. so we thought we’d throw a nice simple one out there to kick off the new year.

For many film lovers and critics the last ten years was known as the decade of remakes, adaptations and attempts to bring old stories to life.. sometimes with dire results.

The Lord of the Rings, Transformers, Sin City, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, King Kong, 3:10 to Yuma, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Alice in Wonderland, Dawn of the Dead, The 300, Infernal Affairs, Hell Boy, Superman, Batman, Where the Wild Things Are… all remakes, adaptations or classic stories brought to life for the first time on the big screen.

For some, original storylines and characters loose their authenticity when, for example, brought from the comic book page to the silver screen. Some aspects of a story which originally captivated a select audience, when adapted to film, often come across as being watered down to suit Hollywood’s mass-market.. much to the displeasure of true fans and followers.

Others find satisfaction in Hollywood spending big bucks on remaking classic favorites. But, as we all know, the results aren’t always inspiring or satisfying.

Studio Ghibli New Film

Studio Ghibli have made the official announcement of their new full length feature film titled Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty). The film will be an adaptation of Mary Norton's Carnegie Medal winning novel The Borrowers and will be directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi.
Unlike the original novel, which tells a story about tiny people who "borrow" things from normal humans during the 1950's in England, Studio Ghibli have transferred their version to Tokyo Koganei in 2010 (Koganei is where Studio Ghibli is settled)
Yonebayashi earlier worked as a key animator on previous Ghibli works like Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo and Spirited Away and was animation director for Miyazaki Goro's Gedo Senki.
It will be released Summer 2010.
